The Keeper of the Flame Award

Preserving Tradition, Inspiring Community, Honoring Legacy

About the Award

The Keeper of the Flame Award was established to celebrate extraordinary individuals who champion community, uphold the traditions of camaraderie and humor, and keep the spark of human connection burning bright.

In a world that moves fast, the "Keeper of the Flame" is someone who slows us down to remind us of where we came from, who brings people together through shared stories and laughter, and who selflessly dedicating their life to enriching the artistic and cultural fabric of our community.

This honor is not merely an accolade for past achievements; it is a living symbol of stewardship—recognizing those whose heart, spirit, and dedication light the way for generations to follow.

Why We Created This Award

Culture and community do not survive on their own—they require guardians. We created the Keeper of the Flame Award to:

  • Honor Unsung Pillars: Recognize the cultural storytellers, historians, and leaders who build and sustain creative communities behind the scenes and on the stage.

  • Keep Tradition Alive: Ensure that the values of warmth, fellowship, laughter, and hospitality remain central to our collective identity.

  • Inspire the Future: Establish an enduring annual tradition that encourages future generations to carry the torch of stewardship, generosity, and community involvement.

The Inaugural Recipient: Barry Dougherty

It is with profound gratitude and admiration that we present the inaugural 2026 Keeper of the Flame Award to Barry Dougherty.

Barry has spent decades as a historian, author, humorist, and beloved guardian of our shared theatrical and social heritage. His sharp wit, deep loyalty, and steadfast devotion to honoring others have made him the ultimate "keeper of the flame."

As Barry bravely fights his battle with stage 4 kidney cancer, this award stands as a testament to the warmth and light he has continually poured into all of our lives. He sets the standard for what it truly means to be a champion of camaraderie and heart.

Beginning with Barry Dougherty in 2026, the Keeper of the Flame Award will be presented annually during the Thanksgiving season of gratitude. Each year, we will come together as a community to pass the torch to a new recipient who exemplifies these same timeless values of connection, stewardship, and brotherhood.
